This guide is general education, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. Urgent, severe or worsening symptoms belong with the local emergency service or a qualified clinician.

What this guide covers

Sports and night mouthguards compared. This source-reviewed orientation page separates stable identify-the-appliance-procedure-material-image-type-date-and-specific-problem principles from decisions that depend on examination, imaging justification, growth, tooth and gum condition, medical history, treatment stage, individual instructions, healing, device fit, sport rules and an appropriately qualified dental or medical professional. The named editions, URLs and reuse limits were checked on 2026-09-10.

It remains outside search indexes pending a second-person clinical editorial review and localisation.

How to use it

Start with the description that most closely matches your question about Sports and night mouthguards compared. Use the evidence section to understand what is known, then use the boundary section to decide when self-education should stop and clinical care should begin.

The page keeps the main question, its evidence base and its limits together in one canonical place. That makes it useful as a quick orientation and avoids splitting a broad subject into shallow pages before each narrower answer has enough verified material of its own.

Reviewed editorial notes

These concise notes are independently written from the source set below. In an emergency, use the local emergency number and follow the dispatcher rather than relying on a static page.

Match guard type and fit to the sport and changing dentition

FDI distinguishes stock, mouth-adapted and custom-made guards and recommends custom-made protection for contact, combat and other high-risk sports. Record sport, governing-body rule, age and growth, braces, missing or erupting teeth, material, fitting date and whether the guard stays in place without clenching while allowing breathing and communication. A retail label or thickness alone cannot certify fit, retention, shock distribution or compliance with a competition rule.

Inspect, clean and replace without promising prevention

Follow the maker’s cleaning, storage and heat limits and have fit checked periodically, especially during growth, orthodontic change or after dental treatment. Replace or professionally reassess a guard that is split, distorted, rough, loose, difficult to clean or no longer fits. Mouthguards reduce aspects of oral trauma risk but do not make a sport injury-proof or replace helmets and other required equipment. A night guard for grinding is a different clinical device and is not interchangeable with a sports guard.
